On Bennett's Birthday

Last night on Bennett's birthday, we had a date - just the two of us.  We left the kids at home with a babysitter and decided that we needed to get away for a few hours.

We had planned to go on a much needed date last week when Bennett was sick but were unable to go.

So, once Bennett started to feel better, we decided we'd take some time away together to strengthen our marriage.  Besides, going out without the children would give us some time to reflect on Bennett's birthday. how much he as grown/changed and what the last year has been like for us.

We talked about ways in which we have changed over the last year and how Bennett's life has affected us since his birth.  We recounted the day of his birth and predicted where we will be in another year from now.  (these are likely blog posts for the future. :))

We had a great time.  We felt badly that we weren't with Bennett on his actual birthday but we knew we'd be celebrating this weekend and he'd not know the difference.

But we felt a bit tickled when when we decided to go to Coldstone Ice Cream for an after dinner treat and found they were giving away ice cream as a way to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is just one of those "in the last year" moments we've had since Bennett was born.  Shortly after learning of Bennett's CF diagnosis, we learned that he would qualify for his own wish (only children with terminal illnesses, ages 2.5 through 18, can qualify).

So, when we were asked if we wanted to donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we definitely did.  And as a way to thank us for our donation, we were asked if we wanted to write our names on a star.  Instead, we thought we'd honor the very special birthday boy instead.

  1. Happy Birthday to sweet Bennett!! Did it make you cry the first time you heard he qualified for Make a Wish? I made me cry but then it turned to a smile :)

  2. Happy Birthday Bennett! :) I had no idea this was going on at Cold Stone! Was it all ALL of them or just your local one?! What a great fundraiser.
