It happened for the first time several months ago but it resolved itself spontaneously so I didn't think much more about it.
But on Wednesday, I received a phone call from the principal from Bennett's school called me with a very cool and calm voice, "Breck, we have a little problem with Bennett..."
I waited anxiously to hear...had his g-tube fallen out? is he sick? was there a problem with his enzymes?
The principal continued, "...his teachers just changed his diaper..."
I interrupted, "is his rectum protruding? Yeah...it's totally fine. I'll be right there."
I picked Bennett up from school and hoped his rectal prolapse would resolve on its own, which it did within a few hours.
But, two days later, it happened again, for more than 12 hours straight. At this point, I realized, we've got to get this taken care of soon. We have an appointment with the Pediatric Surgeon tomorrow afternoon.
I hope that I'm wrong but, from what I understand, there are really no options other than surgery again.
There is always a serious risk of his losing his bowel but the Pediatric Surgeon believes his sphincter muscle is so lose that the rectal prolapse is more annoying than life-threatening. Either way, it's got to be dealt with soon.
At one point this evening, Brian mentioned, "this is not a good time for this..." to which I replied, "Cystic Fibrosis has never asked us if it's a good time, so it doesn't surprise me CF didn't bothered to ask us now."
